II- READING COMPREHENSION
TEXT :
"I shall not go any farther." He said. We shall say goodbye to each other here: it would not do if we burst into teas at the station, in front of your friends. And I do not want to leave your mother alone just now. Your mother is very upset. I am too. We are all terribly upset. But we must be brave, my son. My brother will look after you. But work hard. Work as you used to work here. We have made many sacrifices for you: they must not be for nothing. Do you hear me?
"Yes!" I said.
He remained silent for a moment, then went on:
"You see" I had no father to look after me, as you had. At least, not for very long; when I was twelve years old I became orphan; and I had to make my own way in life. I was not easy. The uncles in whose car I was left treated me more like a slave than a nephew. Not that I was a burden to them for very long: they hired me out to the Syrians almost at once. I was simply a domestic drudge, and I had to hand over everything I earned to my uncles. But even so it did not diminish their cruelty and greed. I always had to keep my own counsel and work hard to make a name for myself. You… but I have said enough. Seize your opportunity. And make me proud of you. I ask no more of you. Do it?
"I will, Father"
"Goodbye, little one, goodbye! "
"Goodbye, Father!"
